Twelve Steps for a Stress-Free Move

There’s no doubt that moving to a new home is super exciting, but it takes so much work and organization that the process can take away some of the joy of it all. However, with careful planning and organization, you can ensure a smooth and successful transition. Here’s how to make your move as stress-free as possible.

1. Start Early and Create a Timeline

Once you have a moving date, start the planning process. Create a detailed timeline that includes important milestones such as packing days, hiring movers (if needed), and the actual moving day. Having a visual schedule will help you stay organized and on track.

2. Declutter and Downsize

Before you start packing, take the opportunity to declutter and downsize your belongings. Assess each item and decide whether it’s worth bringing to your new mini home, or if that item may be better served being sold or donated to someone in need. Downsizing not only reduces the amount you need to move but also ensures that your new space isn’t cluttered.

3. Gather Packing Supplies

You’ll need a variety of boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, packing paper, and markers for labelling, and having these on hand well in advance is going to make life a lot easier. Consider eco-friendly packing materials to reduce waste and environmental impact.

4. Create a Packing Plan

Develop a systematic packing plan to make the process more efficient. Start by packing items you use less frequently, such as seasonal clothing and decorations. Clearly label each box with its contents and the room it should go to in your new mini home. This will make unpacking a breeze.

5. Let the Right People/ Agencies Know

Notify important parties of your upcoming move. This includes your current and future utility providers, post office for mail forwarding, and any subscription services you receive regularly. Don’t forget to update your address with government agencies, banks, and insurance companies.

6. Hire Movers or Enlist Help

If you have large or heavy furniture, consider hiring professional movers. Obtain quotes from different moving companies and book well in advance to secure your desired moving date. Alternatively, enlist the help of friends and family if you plan to handle the move yourself (and be sure to budget for pizza and beverages once the move is done to say thanks).

7. Prepare an Essentials Box

Pack an essentials box containing items you’ll need immediately upon arrival at your new mini home. If you need coffee to get going every day, be sure you have everything you need to make it close to hand! Know where your toothbrush is! Having these essentials readily available will make your first day in your new home more comfortable.

8. Secure Valuables

Keep valuable items like jewelry, important documents, and irreplaceable heirlooms with you during the move. Place them in a secure bag or container that you’ll personally transport.

9. Take Care of Your Plants and Pets

If you have plants or pets, make arrangements for their safe transport. Ensure your plants are well-watered before the move, and consider moving them in your personal vehicle. For pets, pack their essentials, including food, water, and comfort items.

10. Conduct a Final Walkthrough

Before leaving your current residence, conduct a final walkthrough to check for any overlooked items or forgotten belongings. Ensure all utilities are turned off, windows and doors are locked, and keys are returned to the landlord or real estate agent if applicable.

11. Unpack Methodically

Upon arriving at your new mini home, unpack methodically. Begin with essentials like bedding, toiletries, and kitchen items. Gradually unpack room by room, starting with the most frequently used areas. Don’t rush the process; take your time to arrange your new space thoughtfully.

12. Stay Organized

As you settle into your new mini home, stay organized to maintain a clutter-free and comfortable living space. Implement storage solutions that maximize your available space and keep your belongings well-organized.
